Franz Diderik Boe is a Norwegian artist who specialized in still lifes and landscapes. He is also known as Franz Didrik Boe or the French version, Francis Didier Boe.
Early Years
Franz Diderik Boe was born and raised in Bergen, Norway, as the second oldest of seven siblings. Inspired by the local artistic community, including Johan Christian Dahl, he moved to Copenhagen, where he enrolled at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
There he studied under architect Gustav Friedrich Hetsch and sculptor Herman Wilhelm Bissen. He also trained with artist Christen Kobke. In 1849, he moved to Paris, where he studied under Danish expatriate artist Theodor Groenland.
Return Home
Starting in 1852, the artist's vision began to deteriorate due to an eye condition, which affected his later works. After eight years in Paris, he returned to Norway.
He lived in Nordland from 1858 to 1861 and from 1863 to 1864, primarily painting landscapes and nature scenes. In 1864, he married Hanne Marie Arnesen, a teacher from Lofoten. Later that same year, the couple moved to Bergen, where he spent the rest of his life.
Museum Collections
The artist's works are represented in several public art museums, mainly in Norway. Notable collections can be found at the National Gallery in Oslo, Bergen Billedgalleri, and Oskar's Hall in Oslo.
