A trove of previously unknown works by the genius of the Renaissance has been discovered in the depths of Florence. Archival documents and hidden frescoes are revealing new facets of Michelangelo's talent for the first time.

On March 4, 2026, at a press conference in Rome, researcher Valentina Salerno presented three previously unknown archival documents proving that the great master entrusted the storage of his works to students.

A decade in Archives

Valentina Salerno's research began with an unexpected discovery. One archival document reported that in 1550, the artist joined the Brotherhood of the Holy Crucifixion.

The following ten years, Salerno spent immersed in the archives of the Vatican, museums of Italy and Paris.

"Maniacal Plan" Against Inheritance

According to Salerno's version, Michelangelo acted according to a "maniacal plan," pursuing the goal of not letting his works fall into the hands of his nephew Leonardo di Buonarroti Simoni.

"The works are hidden in this room," Salerno quotes, "they are locked so securely that they require a system of many keys, so that no one can access them without the permission of the others."

Bust of Christ and Portrait Similarity

In parallel with the main discovery, Salerno announced a second attribution: a white marble bust of Christ the Savior from the Basilica of Sant'Agnese, which is officially listed as by an unknown author.

Salerno points to the portrait resemblance of the bust to Tommaso dei Cavalieri — a young aristocrat to whom the artist was attached.

Status of Research

It is important to note that Valentina Salerno's work has not yet undergone peer review, which means that her conclusions are preliminary in nature.
