"Millennium of Russia" is a majestic monument that captured in bronze the thousand-year path of Russian statehood.
Erected in Novgorod in 1862, it became an eternal witness to the historical calling of the Varangians in 862.
Monument Description
The bell-shaped pedestal is crowned by a giant globus cruciger — a symbol of embodied state power. Around it flow six sculptural compositions. The total height of the monument reaches 15.7 meters.

Rurik — the first Russian ruler, depicted in the armor of an ancient Russian warrior. His figure rises above the others, symbolizing the beginning of Russian statehood.

Monument History
The grand opening of the monument took place on September 8 (20), 1862, in the presence of Emperor Alexander II. During the war years, the monument was damaged but restored.
